The Day He Caught Me Trying To Catch Him …For Cheating!

My friend loaned it to me. “It will work, I’m telling you just put this under his seat and it will work. It’s even voice activated and will save the battery. Just take it.” She carefully handed it to me in the Target parking lot like we were working for the CIA. Every night I put the recorder under the seat. I couldn’t wait for him to get home so I could listen to every word. I stayed up until 2:00 a.m. many nights listening to the shshsssccchhsssh sound of noise. Pure static. I worked on it for hours. While my friend and I were having coffee to discuss what could be going wrong, my cell phone rang. Of course, you already know it was my ex. “Really? REALLY!!!!????” I looked at my friend and whispered, “He found it.” I was more worried about the fact that he threw it in a dumpster than his anger. This is the stuff we resort to. Hidden cameras, recorders, remote controlling people to help you look for dating sites, etc. It was all for naught. Looking back, I spent one year devoted to hiring detectives, following him, using tape recorders, and it was a waste of time. I never did catch him but he moved in with the other woman while we were separated. I guess that should tell you something. The best thing you can do for yourself if you find yourself playing detective is to try to work it out with a good therapist, meditation, prayer, and acknowledging the fact that without trust and self-care you will eventually lose yourself. It’s inevitable. You feel crazy, unhinged, and nothing else matters. The thoughts are almost impossible to stop and you find yourself losing it- literally losing it! When I finally did leave it was like the battle of the century, the divorce gossip story in a small town. You know, like when you are getting the kids out of the car and everyone is glaring at you or when you show up for soccer games and people turn away because they “don’t have those issues”. Please. Yes, I acted like an insane woman for a while but I made it. If you’re playing detective, I won’t judge. Don’t judge yourself either. I’ve been there and I know what that feels like. Maybe next time I will write about the hidden camera that only took pictures of the deer in the woods.
